It’s official!  The State Library of South Australia is a winner!

This exquisite Victorian ‘piano doll’ (pictured above), circa 1890s, is part of the State Library’s Children’s Literature Research Collection (CLRC). Not strictly a child’s toy, it is rather a decoration for a piano or ladies dressing table.

This international congress for lace-makers, lace enthusiasts and collectors is being held in Adelaide from 18 to 20 July.  This is only the second time this congress has been held outside of Europe. 

The Library is participating with a small display of items from our collection, including the17th Century prayer book which has been exquisitely recreated. 

Items from the South Australian Lace Guild will also be on display in theTreasures Wall area. 

There will be exhibitions at Adelaide University and sessions at various venues on North Terrace.

Some say “old rockers never die”, but they are mere mortals like the rest of us. In the past month we have lost two iconic Australian singers who both happened to have begun their careers in Adelaide: Doc Neeson of The Angels and Jim Keays of The Masters Apprentices.

If you visit Kangaroo Island’s Dudley Peninsula, you may come away thinking you’ve been to ‘Tiger’ Peninsula. On Dudley there’s Tiger’s Cairn or Tiger’s Knob, Tiger’s Tooth at Cape Heart, and Tiger’s Hill. They are all named for (or by) Stamford Wallace ‘Tiger’ Simpson, sometimes known as ‘Anzac’.

The State Library has a thriving Transcription Program with twelve dedicated volunteers working on our priority handwritten archival documents–but I have discovered that unbeknownst to the Library, family historians and other researchers are also quietly transcribing our archival documents on their own behalf.

Online Projects are excited to announce that the first major round of indexing for the South Australian Red Cross Information Bureau has been completed. It has taken a little over 6 months to index 8024 records (there were handful of the 8033 packets missing at the time of receipt in 1919).
